The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is a national organization of more than 33,000 registered nurses and other healthcare professionals dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching, research and education in the field of oncology. A prime goal of ONS is to provide a network of peer support and exchange for oncology nurses. To do so, ONS introduced a formal structure of Special Interest Groups (SIG) to facilitate networking of ONS members in an identified subspecialty or interest area. The Pharmaceutical/Industry Nursing (PIN) SIG was established in 2000.

Pharmaceutical/Industry Nursing SIG Mission Statement

The mission of the Pharmaceutical/Industry Nursing SIG is to enhance and promote the image of professional oncology nurses functioning in industry and pharmaceutical (non-traditional) roles. As well as to provide a support and networking to those functioning in such roles. The major strategic goals are:

Goals
  • Facilitate networking and consultation among nurses in industry.
  • Establish resources for role definition and skill development.
  • Promote information sharing on topics specific to the uniqueness of this type of non-traditional role. Collaborate with other SIGs,ONS Board and other groups with mutual interests.
  • Provide mentoring opportunities by facilitation of discussion between industry and non-industry nurses.
  • Promote collaboration and professionalism between PIN SIG members and those in more traditional settings.
  • Recruit and retain membership in the PIN SIG.
  • Activities

The Pharmaceutical/Industry Nurses SIG is developing a formal and informal networking system for nurses currently employed in non-traditional nursing roles, offering support and guidance to this unique group. In addition the SIG serves as a resource for nurses wanting to learn more about industry roles.

    Benefits/Communication

The SIG meets once per year during the ONS Annual Congress. Pharmaceutical/Industry Nursing SIG leaders regularly communicate with members through written communiqués and through a newsletter. The newsletter features timely articles of interest to oncology nurses working in or seeking information about being employed in non-traditional nursing roles. The newsletter also includes reports on SIG projects and activities, announcements, and messages from SIG leaders. Special interest networking is a major benefit of the SIG.

    Membership Requirements

All SIG members must be members in good standing of the national Oncology Nursing Society. ONS members receive one free SIG membership. Additional SIG memberships are $15 each.
